Sewing Paradise

A Sisterhood Through Suzani

The UCT Irma Stern Museum for the month of July 2016

Just like the walled gardens of Persia, the essence of a suzani is one of flourishing beauty, harmony and protection. Philosophically, they are an attempt to recreate a perfect state and space; a return to Eden. Suzani is bringing the walled garden inside and making it part of domestic life - a daily reminder of how beautiful life can be. Our exhibition aims to share these embroidered versions of Paradise with you and to explore the ways that contemporary female artists respond to these textiles.
Irma Stern herself was a collector of different cultures' textiles and her love for bringing flowers into her home - and paintings - is legendary. We are delighted to bring all of these elements into this space together to celebrate a sisterhood of Suzani.
